Is Email Marketing Dead? Because of the rise in popularity of Social media outlets, Mobile apps, SMS, and Messenger. One might start to believe that the “old ways” of promotion have taken a backseat to more modern methods. People say methods like Display, Classifieds, and Email marketing are pretty much dead.
The problem is they have been saying this for over a decade and they are still dead wrong. You should not discount these marketing methods as they are still extremely effective.
To answer the question “is email marketing dead?” we need only to look at the data.
According to Lifewire, we send more than 74 trillion emails every year? According to the Communicator Benchmark Report in 2017 there were 1.8 million more emails sent in 2017 than 2016. Showing that the market is in fact growing, not dying.
In March 2018 the Radicati Group estimated the total number of email accounts worldwide at 3.8 billion. And estimate the number of consumer and business emails sent per day in 2018 at more than 281 billion. Furthermore, they project the figure to grow to more than 333 billion a day by 2022.
So How Effective is Email Marketing compare to other forms of promotion?
Here is a chart published September 2018 by Marketing Charts
Notice how email marketing is way above the rest in terms of effectiveness. Just because something is new doesn’t mean it is better than the methods before it. Don’t get wrapped up in the latest trends and lose out on the most effective method.
Here are a few of the ways Email Marketing is being used today:
Ever notice that when you buy something from an online retailer you start to get offers or coupons from them flooding your inbox over the next few weeks?
Or you were reading that blog about how a pretzel gets it shape and you entered your email for that free pretzel zucchini casserole recipe. Now you are getting messages from them daily.
How about when you’re shopping online and add an item to the cart but change your mind? Then anywhere from 1 hour to 3 days later you get emails reminding to complete your purchase of the product you abandoned.
This is just a few of the many ways email marketing is still being used to drive revenue today.
While the newer ways to advertise are great and serve their purpose, you would be remiss to leave out email marketing from your efforts. Done right your email list can be the single most valuable asset your business has.
How to Better Utilize Our Traffic with Email Marketing
Think of email marketing as a way to reuse the traffic you worked so hard to get. A visitor to your online shop might not buy right away, but, if you can capture their email address it will allow you to build a relationship with them to try and sell them something in the future. It is a great way to turn your cold traffic into warm traffic you can promote to again and again.
Of course, you don’t want to spam them. Send them some valuable information about something related to your niche. Then mix in some promotional emails. If you are providing consistent value to them they will look forward to your emails. This is a great way to increase open rates and keep your audience engaged and buying.
Smart Tip #1
Grow your own email list and NEVER buy a ready-made list from someone else. The people on the list will have no clue who you are and the list will be useless to you.
What Tools Will You Need For Email Marketing
Ok, we now know that email marketing is not dead and is something we should definitely be utilizing to increase user retention and grow the LTV (Long Term Value) of each and every visitor to our websites.
Let’s look at what we need to begin building our list. To do this we need to have three tools:
You will need to sign up for an autoresponder to handle your email marketing and automation. An Autoresponder allows you to manage:
- Your Lists
- Set up a Welcome Email Series
- Tag and segment your subscribers
- Set up drip campaigns to go out at specific times automatically
- Build sign up forms to capture the emails.
- View and Track Stats like Optin rates, Opens, Clickthroughs
- Send Broadcasts
- And more
Landing Page Builder
You have to have somewhere to send traffic to sign up for your list. A Landing page builder is a great option as it allows you to:
- Create Optin Forms
- Thank you pages
- Landing or Presell pages
- Sales Pages
- Upsells and Downsells
- Split Testing
- And more
A good choice is a company called ClickFunnels. They are the leader in sales funnel creation. It is very beginner friendly, easy to set up and manage your complete sales funnel/s. They are a little pricey at $97 for the basic plan up to $297 for the entire suite. Well worth it for the convenience and outstanding software. You can build anything with ClickFunnels.
A Lead Magnet
A lead magnet is just another way to describe a freebie to get people to enter their email address.
- eBook related to your niche
- A Top 10 tips for ??? pdf
- A top collection of your blog articles
- Training lesson on anything related
- List of the tools you use for your business
- Anything that has value to your target audience.
Smart Tip #2
Don’t use a free service autoresponder like MailChimp. While attractive they are NOT affiliate marketing friendly and will ban you the first time you enter an affiliate link. Save yourself the time and trouble of setting everything up just to be banned.
So to recap, we learned that Email Marketing is definitely not dead and is, in fact, growing at a nice pace and is more effective than any of the listed methods by far. We also learned the 3 basic tools every email marketer needs to be successful.
My goal was to show you that you need to make email marketing a priority and give you a starting point. Don’t ignore what could be the biggest source of revenue for your business.
